ruined

WWI is all around us here, from trenches to tunnels to cemeteries and ruins.  we’ve driven by this particular building many times, and often have seen cars parked on the side of the road, assuming their drivers were exploring these ruined buildings – there’s one at the bottom near the road, one further up and still another if you hike further up the mountain.  We noticed as well, a small structure on the other side of the valley above the cliff face, but darn it, we forgot our ropes and carabiners (kidding, obviously).  Judging by the cross on the outside of the lower building, we figure it was a hospital, or at least partly, as i suppose it would have been the first line of defense to the upper forts and thus perhaps a prison as well?  in any case,  once we got inside we realized it wasn’t a particularly tourist friendly venue. with crumbling walls, dark hallways and old barbed wire laying about, it was fairly frightening, for me and Joey anyway.  The other boys thought it was fantastic and awesome.  but i wasn’t too keen to use my iphone flashlight to meander up pitch black staircases to the great unknown.   dead ends, rooms with no windows, possible morgues?  yes, the reality of enemies, war, hardship and death was eerily present at every turn.

italy adventures…
